Its the Cafe of the Gate of Salvation’s 40h anniversary this year. On the 27th of September 1986, 11 singers met in my lounge-room to try out a couple of songs, and here we are. Well, here I am and here is Tracey Greenberg, the only singer from that first session to still be in the choir. Remarkable. Who knew we would sing for Nelson Mandela, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Audrey Hepburn, support the Blind Boys of Alabama, appear at WOMAD, tour NZ and the USA?
In the ensuing years, about 150 singers have joined, left, rejoined, started their own choirs, had kids who have joined and so on (see the pic above for a sample from 1993-ish) …and now many our alumni will be joining us at he Factory Theatre on August 23 to rip it up one more time. Plus the Heavenly Light Quartet (all COTGOS veterans) will be singing, and Peter Dasent, Jeremy Cook & I will be playing in the band…
