Somewhat surprisingly, I’ve been offered a new position with the choir I started 36 years ago: since returning to Sydney in April, I’ve been sort of consulting and directing with the Café of the Gate of Salvation, filling in while the choir’s ongoing conductors, Fi and Cheryl, both dealt with some serious health issues. It now seems that those issues will not be resolved in the immediate future. Consequently, I’ve been invited to stay on as the Artistic Director for 2023, teaching new material, conducting and providing direction and support for the regular conductors as well as offering guidance to Zoe, the new conductor emerging from the soprano section.
It’s 15 years since I left the choir, and the culture, repertoire and members have inevitably evolved, and it’s daunting for me to step in to someone else’s shoes—but the choir sounds wonderful and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to work in more depth with such a passionate and committed bunch of singers.
By the way— we need tenors and basses right now, so get in touch if you have an urge to sing Black gospel songs a cappella with some wonderful singers. Rehearsals are Wednesdays 7pm-9pm in Erskineville. Contact the choir via the website: http://www.cafeofthegateofsalvation.com.au/dbpage.php?pg=membership
