Singing By The Sea – A 5-day Retreat may not be a snappy title, but I reckon it will sell itself no matter what. Join two dynamic and uplifting choir leaders for a week of vocal joy in the beautiful heritage seaside town of Queenscliff, Victoria. Melbourne singer, choir director and educator Annemarie Sharry (South of the River Choir, Annemarie Sharry Quartet, ACAPPELLAWORKS) and I are longtime colleagues who share a passion for the human voice, for fun and for building community through singing together. I’m looking forward to working with Annemarie who is, to quote Sue Johnson: …a dynamic, fun, creative choir director bringing her excellence as a highly skilled improvising singer and educator…one of the most supportive humans I know – who looks out for her people – celebrating all diversities through the power of song!”
You can expect a diverse and glorious smorgasbord of music from African-American gospel, South African gospel, jazz, original music, European traditions and more in morning and afternoon sessions with the two directors, culminating in some informal performances later in the week—and in between singing sessions explore the culinary delights, wineries, art galleries and wonderful architecture of this lovely town. A welcome dinner, a variety of optional musical evenings, a day’s excursion and a celebratory closing dinner are also included.
There are a limited number of rooms available at the eminently affordable Seaview House (where the tutors are staying) which has the added bonus of being just across the road from our singing venue. Seaview can be booked directly via Jann: sortedbyjann@gmail.com: but there is a range of fantastic accommodation options in Queenscliff, Point Lonsdale and the surrounding area.
