Nets of Mercy
Tony Backhouse - Wednesday, April 06, 2011
I've had a lethargic few months, during which I've been lazily recording some old gospel tunes at home (just vocals and guitar), mucking round on the bass and programming drums (Logic/Ultrabeat/BFD2) and regularly visiting Wellington to (a) see my father and (b) write songs with Bill Lake (well, one so far) and (c) do a workshop with the wonderful Wellington choir Wososi; but now I feel the year has finally started: I've recently started a new 20-voice project choir in Auckland, Nets
of Mercy.
As one could safely predict, we're singing a mix of
traditional gospel and my own songs, and I'm lucky to have some
very gifted singers (including 5 choir directors) on board. The
choir will enjoy a brief (but potentially productive) life, as
after a 9-week run other commitments mean I'm not around in
Auckland enough to maintain it. Anyway, I'm enjoying it very much.
Look out for our one gig on Sunday 29th of May, when we'll
be doing a benefit concert for Christchurch. Also on the bill
will be the wonderful Epsom Vocal Group from Epsom Girls Grammar, who I
currently have the pleasure of coaching, and eclectic 9-voice ensemble led by Wendy Moore, Next Offramp.
